Rochester Wedding First Looks

Guest blog post presented by Ilana from Sugar and Type, a design studio with a serious passion for paper!

Hello Buffalo! I’m so excited to be a member of Buffalo Indie Weddings, rep'ping your sister city, Rochester!
I started my business after getting my Bachelors of Fine Art from RIT, and it’s been an incredible journey. I’ve had the opportunity to work with some amazing clients, and it’s been so fun to share my own journey planning my own wedding!

I know the tradition is to see your partner at the end of the aisle, but I was totally all for breaking that tradition, along with many others. Gregg, my husband, is my best friend, and I really wanted a couple moments with him before the amazing commotion started. Seeing each other (and capturing it on camera) is a "first look". For us, it was totally worth it. We both were shaking with the anticipation to turn around and see each other, and it was like falling in love all over again. It gave us a moment to reflect, and appreciate what was ahead of us, and having a photographer hiding behind the bushes to capture the emotion we felt at that moment was absolutely incredible. There are no rules - do you want your bridesmaids with you? If so, go ahead - this is your moment! Lori and Erin wrote about breaking the tradition here if you want to read all about it!

I absolutely love the raw emotion in this photo, taken by Lori and Erin at Burgandy Basin.

Lori and Erin captured these photos at Ravenwood. This is a perfect picture of pure joy.

I love the look of shock, excitement, overwhelm and awe as he looks at his soon-to-be wife!
I love how Lori and Erin were clearly set up on opposite sides so they captured both the bride and groom's emotions at the same time. They've done the same thing in the photos below, where all the emotion is captured from different angles at the George Eastman House.

Are you planning to do a first look? If so, be sure to share your pictures and comment below on why you're choosing to do one, or why you're not!

Thank you again to Lori and Erin for sharing these beautiful pictures with us!

Bridal Trends: Pop Color Wedding Shoes

Wedding Chicks- Ray + Kelly Photography

Let's talk about shoes! While your dress is one of the most important parts of the day and the focal point of your look, you don't want to forget about the shoes! You want to be comfortable, but you also want to be stylish. Add a hidden pop of color to your look with a pair of colorful shoes. Either match them to your bridesmaids dresses, the color of your wedding or just wear your favorite color!

How adorable are these orange shoes with this tea length dress? If your dress is shorter, your shoes have to be on point. These orange ones are so fun!

If you're looking for a more subtle pop of color, you can't go wrong with blush.

What color shoes are you wearing on your wedding day?

Bridal Trends: Lace & Burlap

{Wedding Chicks-The Goodness}

Lace is such a classic element when it comes to weddings. But maybe it's not your style when it comes to the dress. If you still want to incorporate lace into your wedding, there are many ways to do so! A big trend we're seeing right now is mixing lace and burlap. This is creates a rustic vibe while still keeping it classic! If you're planning a rustic wedding, here is a little inspiration for you...

{Confetti Daydreams- Red Bloom Photography}

Maybe you have a family heirloom or a pieces of a loved one's dress that you want to include in your special day. Wrap it around your bouquet with some burlap! So easy, and it completes the look of a bouquet.

If you're really into this style, why not get a burlap and lace bouquet? This handmade one from Country Barn Babe is stunning- and can be a keepsake forever!

When it comes to burlap and lace, the options really are endless!

I recently shared some insight into how to pick the perfect location for your engagement session, but after talking with Lindsay Stephany, I'm excited to share another approach!

Lindsay has been telling couples to not stress about the location, and pick a random spot to meet her. They spend the time walking around exploring, maybe grabbing coffee. The photos look so natural and casual, and really shows such a variety since they can visit multiple places! I love how these fall photos turned out! Thank you so much Lindsay for sharing these beautiful images!

Bridal Trends: Alternative Hairpieces

If you're looking for a way to add a little something extra to your wedding day look, an alternative hairpiece is the perfect opportunity! There are so many options: from flower crowns to rhinestones, beads and chains. Here is a little mid-week inspiration for you!

Love My Dress- Jannie Baltzer 2015 Collection

A big, bold flower. Elegant and classic, but still not a hairpiece you see on every bride. This ones a showstopper!

We talked about succulents as wedding favors in a post earlier this week. But what about a succulent hairpiece? This has such an earthy feel and would be beautiful for an outdoor summer wedding.

Add a pop of color with a flower crown like this one from local artist EPH Flower Crowns!

A 1920s inspired feather hairpiece. Local designer owllamode has so many unique beautiful pieces like this one!

Make a loose updo your focal point and add a delicate chain hairpiece.

Love the simple elegance of this beaded hairpiece.

Whatever your style is, there are so many unique, alternative hairpieces to choose from! It's a perfect way to add a little more personal style to your look on your big day.
